All You Need to Know about the Maintenance of Floor Drains

One of the most underrated products in the entire plumbing system, floor drains are a basic necessity that must be installed and maintained with equal care.

These are typically found in some unassuming corners of the floor in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and even laundry rooms where there are heavy chances of spillage and overflow. These are apparently the most ignored accessories of the plumbing system and only come to light when there is some blockage or waterlogging. However, like all other fixtures, with little care and maintenance, even these can function perfectly well for years. Here are some maintenance tip for floor drains:

Un-Clogging

Drains often get clogged due to the accumulation of solid waste. Care should be taken to regularly unclog them by scraping out all the hair, debris, and other larger particles that can be seen blocking the drain. Apart from this, regularly pumping the drain with the help of plungers, which are easily available everywhere, can help in keeping the drains free from debris. Also, on noticing slow drainage of water, pouring a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down the pipe can help dissolve most of the debris and clear the line. Drain augers can also be used to reel back the debris clogging the drain and disrupting the flow of water.

Filling the Traps

Drains are built in such a manner that they can quickly drain away all the flooded water into the sewer system. This also means that these drains are a direct link between the home and sewer system. As such, they have a special arrangement in the form of traps to prevent sewer gases from entering the home. These traps need to be filled regularly in order to ensure their efficient functioning. In order to ensure this, people can simply pour a gallon of water down the drain, so the trap is full. This would also help in ensuring that the drain is not clogged.

Regular Cleaning

As important as it is to un-clog the mouth or mesh at the beginning of the drain, cleaning the complete drain is also equally important. Cleaning agents can be poured down the drain to dissolve all kinds of debris. In fact, getting a professional plumber to clean the drain once in a while would also help ensure that the drain works fine for years together.

Even though it always hides in plain sight, a floor drains is as important a component of the plumbing system as something like a shower mixer set.
